Professor and Chairman of the 2nd Department of Orthopedics of the NKUA Medical School

 

George C. Babis, MD, PhD graduated from NKUA Athens (1985). He is currently the Professor and Chairman at the 2nd Department of Orthopedics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School (NKUA).

He has served for 35 years in the Academic Orthopaedic Departments of 3 major Hospitals, KAT Accident Hospital 1988-2008 as resident, fellow, lecturer, assistant professor, Attikon University Hospital 2003-2013 (Assistant and Associate Professor) and Konstantopouleio General Hospital 2013-  (as Professor and Chairman of the 2nd Department of Orthopedics of the NKUA Medical School).

He has been a visiting fellow at Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas (Prof H. Tullos) and Research Fellow (1999-2000), visiting scientist 2001-2003 and 2006-7 at Mayo Clinic Biomechanics Lab., Orthopedic Department, Rochester MN, USA. Prof Babis is mainly interested in complex Adult Reconstruction and has performed more than 8000 hip and knee surgeries and especially Revisions during his carrier. He is also heavily involved in periprosthetic Joint Infections treatment as well as Orthopaedic Trauma.

He is involved in Recon Clinical Research and he is PI in many multicenter RCT studies and participates in a European-wide consortium for large-scale genome-wide association scan and functional genomic studies for osteoarthritis. He is member of 12 scientific societies, and he is the chairman of the Hellenic Chapter of AO-TEU.

He participates in many scientific and government committees. He is Associate editor of Hip International and active reviewer in many major Journals (gained the elite reviewer status in JBJS). Professor Babis holds the Hip Knee Orthopaedics SMPC and serves at the executive Board of Evgenidion Hospital Agia Trias SA.

He has published more than 135 full papers in peer reviewed international journals with >6200 citations, h-index 35. He has authored 25 book chapters in Greek and International textbooks including OKU-11. He has been invited to give more than 500 lectures in domestic and international meetings.
